Understanding and Preventing Subcontracting
Unauthorized subcontracting is a global supply chain issue that tests the ability of international retailers and brands to maintain full oversight of their supply chains. While subcontracting is often a necessity, unauthorized subcontracting – i.e. suppliers’ use of facilities without the prior knowledge or approval of their customer – can undermine companies’ efforts to ensure that their products are produced in facilities that meet their standards.
In Bangladesh, this risk is coupled with widespread building and fire safety deficiencies found in the buildings that house garment factories. The tragedies of Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashions served as a wake-up call for the industry to urgently address building and fire safety issues – and, the discovery of unauthorized orders in these factories underscored the importance of each company’s ability to manage their suppliers and subcontractors, and to ensure that their orders do not end up in unapproved factories.
Taking learnings from the work done by the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, this webinar will explore the policies and practices companies can use to prevent, uncover, and penalize suppliers for using unauthorized subcontractors.
